Parasol Aeonium

Common name:Parasol Aeonium
Botanical name:Aeonium arboreum

Parasol Aeonium is an upright succulent with rosette leaf clusters. It forms a mound and can be easily propagated by cuttings.

Elija Blue Fescue

Common name:Elija Blue Fescue
Botanical name:Festuca glauca 'Elija Blue'

The 'Elijah Blue' is a dwarf variety with gray blue (but sometimes white-looking) foliage. It should receive sun and little summer watering.

Fox Tail Agave, Velvet Agave

Common name:Fox Tail Agave, Velvet Agave
Botanical name:Agave attenuata

This Agave has a dramatic tropical form. Even light frost can damage its succulent leaves. It is great for containers. In the low desert, partial sun will be best. If it becomes top heavy, simply cut and stick in the ground to root. It is not a fast grower and has light green foliage. It will also die after flowering but pups around the mother will survive. Distinctive with its large rosette of leaves perched on a long curving trunk, it is a native from Mexico.

Yellow Stalked Bulbine

Common name:Yellow Stalked Bulbine
Botanical name:Bulbine frutescens

Bulbine frutescens is an evergreen perennial that grows 1' in height and 1'-3' in spread. The leaves are narrow and long. This low- spreading plant is attractive year round.

Wright Buckwheat

Common name:Wright Buckwheat
Botanical name:Eriogonum wrightii

This short shrub will grow 1'-3' tall and has small green leaves with white flowers that bloom in summer.

Dwarf Plecostachys, S. African Whit

Common name:Dwarf Plecostachys, S. African Whit
Botanical name:Plecostachys serpyllifolia

This evergreen shrub reaches 1.5' tall and spreads to 3 times the height. It has woody stems, with clusters of small pinkish flowers which bloom in summer and fall. Its gray foliage makes a good bank, slope or ground cover plant. It will also make a good looking, manicured border plant. It is drought tolerant and needs full sun to light shade.

Pfitzer Juniper

Common name:Pfitzer Juniper
Botanical name:Juniperus X pfitzeriana

Juniperus chinensis 'Pfitzeriana' grows 5'-6' high and 10'-12' wide. This shrub has arching, feathery, gray green foliage. Junipers are highly combustible plants.

Stalked Aeonium

Common name:Stalked Aeonium
Botanical name:Aeonium undulatum

Stalked Aeonium is an unbranched shrub, with somewhat metallic-green, 10" long, spoon shaped leaves. The leaves form large rosettes on stems 2'-3' tall. Flowers are dark yellow; plant rarely blooms. Water regularly in summer.

Dwarf Periwinkle, Dwarf Vinca

Common name:Dwarf Periwinkle, Dwarf Vinca
Botanical name:Vinca minor

This ground cover will grow less than 1' tall and has small, glossy, dark green leaves with blue, purple, lavender, or white flowers that bloom in the spring. This plant can be invasive because it is very fast growing.

Soils and Compost:

Practice grass-cycling by leaving short grass clippings on lawns after mowing, so that nutrients and organic matter are returned to the soil.

Integrated Pest Management:

Attract, or buy beneficial insects such as ladybugs and lacewings to control pest outbreaks in your garden.
